The Shooter
The Shooter
2012 Sahlen/Starburst

Inside the darkened theater, the shooter stood his ground
What purpose was he seeking as he shot so many down?
More questions tease the answers through this multi-clysmic scene
The trigger and the tragedy, a nightmare so obscene

The shooter was the joker; fantasy became the truth
Was the horror of this spectacle an outgrowth of his youth?
When was all the damage done? Appearance but a token?
Results now clearly evident how badly he was broken

A quiet, shy young man, seeming normal, seeming whole
Was it striving for perfection that caused ruin to his soul?
What drove him, what possessed him, to commit this heinous crime?
A time bomb detonating in a gruesome pantomime

(repeat chorus)

Is he devil? Is he demon? The worst we've ever seen?
Untreated in the system, screaming loudly, "please help me"
As the fight continues for compassionate healthcare
Still some turn and look away from truth that's everywhere

(repeat chorus)

Escape was just a miracle
For all who stayed unscathed
From horror etched in memory
Forever so depraved

(repeat chorus)
